Overview

Cynthia Cupit Swenson, Ph.D. is Clinical Psychologist and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is developer of the Multisystemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect treatment model that is now disseminated in 7 countries and is based on a 5-year NIMH-funded randomized effectiveness trial. In addition, she is co-developer of Multisystemic Therapy – Building Stronger Families, an ecological model for treating co-occurring child maltreatment and parental substance use and MST for Intimate Partner Violence (MST-IPV) that provides treatment for families who are experiencing child maltreatment and intimate partner violence. For the last 20 years, Dr. Swenson has been co-director of a village-based global health project in rural Ghana, West Africa. Also, she was named Kempe-Haruv fellow to join an international blue ribbon panel to re-design child protection policy in the United States.
