Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

TF-CBT is a conjoint child and parent psychotherapy approach for children and adolescents who are experiencing significant emotional and behavioral difficulties related to traumatic life events. It is a components-based treatment model that incorporates trauma-sensitive interventions with cognitive behavioral, family, and humanistic principles and techniques.

Children and parents learn new skills to help process thoughts and feelings related to traumatic life events; manage and resolve distressing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to traumatic life events; and enhance safety, growth, parenting skills, and family communication.

Alternatives for Families: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT)

The AF-CBT Innovators CBLC is a collaborative learning project conducted as part of Project BEST. It aims to increase access among South Carolina’s children to Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT). AF-CBT is a trauma-informed, evidence-based treatment designed to improve the relationship between children and caregivers in families involved in arguments, frequent conflict, physical force/discipline, child physical abuse, or child behavior problems.

The AF-CBT Innovators CBLC involves the communities served by the CARE House of The Pee Dee, the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center (DNLCC), and Julie Valentine Center.

The CBLC will involve a group of multidisciplinary professionals who work with abused and traumatized children and youth in Berkeley, Charleston, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Greenville, Kershaw, Marlboro, Marion, Pickens, and Williamsburg counties. The participating child abuse professionals will work together to ensure that AF-CBT is available in their community for every abused and traumatized child who needs it.

All training for the AF-CBT Innovators CBLC is funded by a grant from The Duke Endowment, and is offered free of charge for participants.
